Summary & Tips:
1) Why is Social Media important?
Recognising human behaviour and how much information is absorbed from our phones via social channels:
Some incredible stats can be found here:
2) Which social channels to choose
This largely comes down to your own knowledge and time. You should make sure that if you are going to use a channel you do it well rather than try to use too many.
Some good guides to different channels and their demographics can be found here:

3) What content
Try to follow the 80-20 rule where 80% of your posts are focused on entertaining, educating and inspiring your followers and 20% is focused on specific call to actions (encouraging your followers to do specific things).
Remember that the algorithms will penalise you if you are consistently asking people to leave the platform hence restricting the call to actions to 20%.
Don't forget to comment and engage with posts from other clubs and individuals - it should be a 2-way communication rather than only pushing content at others.
4) How to maximise the results
Firstly, conduct a digital health check:
- Make sure your business profile is set up on google: https://www.google.com/business/
- Review your website:
- Are there clear sections relating to the activities you conduct at your club?
- Is the copy concise with images included?
- Can people pay online with minimal clicks? If not, this will reduce your income significantly and increase your administrative burden. To understand the importance of online payments we have a useful guide here: The Benefits Of Collecting Online Payments - Our Top 10!
Decide on the best approach for posting:
- Single channel - likely to be simple to post direct from that platform
- Facebook and Instagram - meta (Facebook parent company) business suite is free software to make it easier to post to those channels: https://business.facebook.com/
- Multiple channels - it may be worth investing in social media management software. Clubspark does not publically endorse any of the options available but guides can be found by a google search or via this link: https://www.investopedia.com/best-social-media-management-software-5087716
Collect and curate your content:
- plan out your social posts on a spreadsheet or calendar so you can plan ahead and use your time efficiently
- set up a WhatsApp group or similar with members to make it easier to collect content to use
5) Who could help?
- Look at your members social channels - is there a standout social media star at your club?
- Check LinkedIn and search for members who have a marketing or digital professional background
- Are there any 20-24 age group members who would be interested in helping to aid the reach to a traditionally difficult sporting demographic?
- Are you a big club with a budget that could use an external consultant?
